![]() It was not bright enough nor did it last long enough to be practical, but it was the precedent behind the efforts of scores of experimenters over the next 75 years. In 1802, Humphry Davy used what he described as "a battery of immense size", consisting of 2,000 cells housed in the basement of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, to create an incandescent light by passing the current through a thin strip of platinum, chosen because the metal had an extremely high melting point. In 1761, Ebenezer Kinnersley demonstrated heating a wire to incandescence. Other inventors with generators and incandescent lamps, and with comparable ingenuity and excellence, have long been forgotten because their creators did not preside over their introduction in a system of lighting.Įarly pre-commercial research Original carbon-filament bulb from Thomas Edison's shop in Menlo Park ![]() The lamp was a small component in his system of electric lighting, and no more critical to its effective functioning than the Edison Jumbo generator, the Edison main and feeder, and the parallel-distribution system. Historian Thomas Hughes has attributed Edison's success to his development of an entire, integrated system of electric lighting. They conclude that Edison's version was able to outstrip the others because of a combination of three factors: an effective incandescent material, a higher vacuum than others were able to achieve (by use of the Sprengel pump) and a high resistance that made power distribution from a centralized source economically viable. Historians Robert Friedel and Paul Israel list inventors of incandescent lamps prior to Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison of General Electric. Some governments have begun a phase-out of incandescent light bulbs to reduce energy consumption. Most incandescent bulbs can be replaced by fluorescent lamps, high-intensity discharge lamps, and light-emitting diode lamps (LED). Incandescent bulbs typically have short lifetimes compared with other types of lighting around 1,000 hours for home light bulbs versus typically 10,000 hours for compact fluorescents and 20,000–30,000 hours for lighting LEDs. Quartz envelope halogen infrared heaters are used for industrial processes such as paint curing and space heating. The heat produced by filaments is used in some applications, such as heat lamps in incubators, lava lamps, and the Easy-Bake Oven toy. The luminous efficacy of a typical incandescent bulb for 120 V operation is 16 lumens per watt (lm/W), compared with 60 lm/W for a compact fluorescent bulb or 100 lm/W for typical white LED lamps. Less than 5% of the energy they consume is converted into visible light the rest is lost as heat. Incandescent bulbs are much less efficient than other types of electric lighting. As a result, the incandescent bulb became widely used in household and commercial lighting, for portable lighting such as table lamps, car headlamps, and flashlights, and for decorative and advertising lighting. They require no external regulating equipment, have low manufacturing costs, and work equally well on either alternating current or direct current. Incandescent bulbs are manufactured in a wide range of sizes, light output, and voltage ratings, from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts. A bulb socket provides mechanical support and electrical connections. Current is supplied to the filament by terminals or wires embedded in the glass. ![]() ![]() The filament is enclosed in a glass bulb that is filled with vacuum or inert gas to protect the filament from oxidation. ![]() ![]() Granulating bluesįinding blue sedimentary colors is pretty easy. ![]() Whereas blues and purples, have a good range of granulating colors.īelow is a list of some common granulating watercolors (non exhaustive). You will also find that cheaper, student grade watercolors will granulate less because their paint formula tends to contain less pigment (pigments are expensive, so lower quality paint uses less of them).īut generally speaking, certain colored pigments have more sedimentary qualities than others.įor example, finding red and yellow hues that granulate is really hard. But the brand and grade of paint can also influence the amount of granulation, since the formula varies a lot between manufacturers. Which watercolors granulate ?Īs you’ve probably gathered by now, whether or not your watercolors granulate depends very much on the type of pigments which comprise the paint. Remember, you can vary your choice of paper according to the effect you’re trying to achieve. On cold-pressed or rough watercolor paper the dispersion of pigments is slightly more even, and the pigments tend to fall into the low crevices and valleys of the rough paper surface. On smooth hot-pressed paper the pigments tend to do as they please and move around randomly until all the water evaporates. The mottled textures of granulation can be observed on all types of watercolor paper. Granulating pigments are heavier than non-granulating pigments, and so they sink into the paper under the influence of gravity. As the water evaporates, the pigments settle onto the paper. When you lay down a wet watercolor wash, at first the color pigments are suspended in the water of the fluid paint. As a result the degree of granulation differs quite a bit. Obviously, given the vast range of different paints, the size and shape of pigments is changeable from one tube of paint to the next. Larger, heavier, irregularly sized pigments will cause more granulation and these can bring about some wonderful mottled textured effects. As a result the size and shape of pigments varies slightly from one paint to another.Īs a general rule, small fine pigment particles will produce less granulation, and these watercolors produce a flat and smooth painted surface. These clumps can be broken down by milling before the pigments are made into paints, but not all pigments are equally as easy to grind. Many synthetic organic pigments form clumps during manufacturing. Today the majority of pigments used in paint are man made (known as synthetic organic pigments). These natural pigments are the origin of some of the poetic paint “names” we recognize today, (names such as Alizarin, Sepia, Gamboge etc.). In the past, artists used organic substances to provide pigments for their paint. Pigments are the basis of the color appearance in our watercolors. Whatever your preference, this is a characteristic worth getting to know ! Granulating pigments Others exploit this effect to produce beautiful dappled effects in their artwork. Some watercolor artists prefer smooth even colors and do all they can to avoid granulating paints. The subtle textures created by granulation is something unique to watercolors ! Personally I like the expressiveness produced by this effect. Granulating watercolors produce delicate textures because of the characteristics of their pigment particles. Some pigments tend to cluster together creating uneven mottled washes. Watercolor granulation results from the type of pigments used in the paint formula. You’ve probably heard watercolor artists discussing granulating paints (sometimes referred to as flocculating or sedimentary watercolors). And granulation is one of the traits that adds incredible texture. One of the most beautiful characteristics of watercolor is the surprising textures it can produce. When you play around with watercolors for a while you’ll soon notice this interesting aspect of watercolor painting.ĭon’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with your paint ! Have you ever noticed how watercolor paints behave differently ? Some colors produce a smooth even wash, but others seem to have a life of their own, creating amazing textured patterns.
